Portfolio

This page is dedicated to artworks that don’t fit with any of my main personal projects (i.e. Yokai March, East of the Moon, Phantomfield). Some of them are commissions that I have worked on, or projects that I have been involved in. Others are one-off pieces that I have made as gifts. While I specialise in manga-style comics and art, I also like to experiment with other styles too.

Projects

2022 – Science Museum Technicians Gallery Illustrations: A fantastic exhibition that uses Manga to appeal to a young adult audience, I was brought on by the main artist, the very talented Shangomola Edunjobi, as an assistant to help finish the project in time. My task revolved around 100 portraits of technicians from different backgrounds working in their roles that would be used in the interactive part of the exhibition space. I would take the inked character design (inked by award-winning artist Elena Vitagliano), combine it with a concept sketch of the background and apply manga tones, shading and special effects that would bring the image to life.

2022 – Manga Jiman Poster: As 1st place winner of the 2021 Manga Jiman competition I was given the job of producing an illustration to advertise the 2022 competition and it’s theme of Connect. I approached this piece in the same way as I would with a manga for a competition, having an image that tells a story both with the characters and the background. Set possibly in an alternative future, a woman works alone in a tower full of communication technology; probably one of many scattered around the country. This technology keeps people connected, but her source of human contact is the local postman, delivering her mail during one of her breaks. This brought together many of the themes I explored in previous Jiman works too.

2019 – Axis Mundi Character Art: These were designs commissioned by James Nowlan for his boardgame prototype. Based on sketches conceived several years earlier, the designs were fleshed out and used as art for the box and character cards. I adapted my style to something more painterly that would work well with the backgrounds and setting.

2016 – Theotanium Games Character Art – Art made for a pathfinder campaign made by Ian Balboa, featuring his original characters from the setting and the fabled Gobsmacker weapon. This art was used in the campaign booklet and was even made into paper standees to be used in the games.

Gift Art

Cats in a Tree (2021) – Based on a pair of adventurous cats that love to come into my garden, this piece was inspired by a photograph I took of one cat that made it to the top of a hawthorn hedge but never quite made it to the top of the holly tree where the birds were waiting. I was very happy with the composition of this piece, evoking the kind of photographic dynamic of my favourite Ukiyo-e artist: Utagawa Hiroshige.

St Peter-in-the-Forest (2019) – Located in Epping Forest near Walthamstow, this 19th century was undergoing renovation when I first visited it with my mother. This picture was made as a gift for her and captures the striking tower during winter, framed by holy bushes trees.
